Will Artificial Intelligence take your job?

In case you missed Richard Brashear’s column last week, here is the link. How GPT-4 can boost your business marketing. Read it and read it again. He has done several columns about AI capabilities and the impact on marketing your business, but this article sent me down a research rabbit hole.

As Brashear has reported, AI has revolutionized the digital marketing industry. In simple terms GPT-4 is an artificial intelligence model that is used to generate text, most of which comes from absorbing the internet, all of it.

“From a marketing perspective, it writes better messaging that most people I know. I’m actually in the process of writing a book using GPT-4,” said Brashear, CEO of GroupRB Marketing.

My first thought was I hoped ABD’s publisher, Neil Gordon, was busy recording podcasts, Biz Bits, or breaking other business news stories and might have missed the implications. After all, I am the editor and a contributing writer for our publication.

But wait, there’s more. The technology can instantly adapt a drawing into a working website, ace the bar exam, build a video game in under 60 seconds, and generate recipes based on pictures of leftovers in your fridge.

Pretty impressive, right? So back to the original question, will you or I be replaced by Artificial Intelligence? The answer is, it’s complicated.

Brashear believes it may create new career paths such as GPT prompting because you get out of it what you put into it.

“I believe it’s going to make some types of jobs and employees more efficient, especially in website and technical development, including creating code.”

Keeping in mind my own anxiety regarding being replaced by AI, I found numerous reputable sources for which jobs may be lost to AI or will likely not be replaced by the technology that doesn’t sleep or take lunch breaks.

Both Hubspot and Business Insider agreed on the list of jobs that could be replaced and, in some cases, already are being performed by automation or AI. Both studies analyzed the likely probability that a job will be replaced by automation and computerization — based primarily on the level of routine a job has and the specialized training and social intelligence required to complete it.

Telemarketing jobs could be in jeopardy and in some cases have already been replaced by AI.
  • Telemarketing
  • Bookkeeping clerks
  • Compensation and Benefits Managers
  • Receptionists
  • Couriers
  • Proofreaders
  • Computer support specialists
  • Market research analysts
  • Advertising Salespeople
  • Retail Salespeople (think self-checkout)
  • Paralegals
  • Financial analysts

The good news is that experts agree that bots and AI will make employees in those professions better at their jobs and possibly even more secure in their career choices, not the other way around.

Now for the jobs that will likely NOT be replaced and there is a reason for those professions appearing on the “Do Not Disturb” list. Most require human judgement, an element of emotional reach, or a level of creativity that AI is not capable of achieving.

Trades including mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians would be safe from being replaced by AI.
  • Clergymen
  • Doctors
  • Social workers
  • Lawyers and Judges
  • Engineers
  • Trades including mechanics, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers
  • Artists
  • Farmers
  • Contractors
  • CEOs
  • Writers

I must admit, I celebrated that last entry on the list. It was also a reminder that Brashear referred to the advent and advances of Artificial Intelligence being “as big as the impact of the internet.”

Could GPT-4 have written this article faster than I did? I would bet on it. Would it have poured in the heart and soul that I did? I would like to think not. The fact is, some of the corporate blogs and articles you read on the internet today, were written by GPT-4 or some version of AI.

What AI can and can’t do is fascinating and a little frightening. In tomorrow’s Digital Marketing column, Richard Brashear will give you a closer look at the reasons behind why your job is safe from a technological takeover.
