A familiar mission setting a new goal

A local nonprofit organization that partners with companies helping individuals face life’s challenges is focusing on a new goal.

The Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church of Augusta was packed full of business and community leaders as the United Way of the CSRA (UWCSRA) held its annual campaign kickoff. In years past, it included the announcement of the campaigns’ monetary goal. Not this year.

“What we will announce is that our goal is to help 30,000 ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families by the year 2030,” explained Brittany Burnett, President and CEO of UWCSRA. “That’s a huge, impactful goal, but it’s really way more important than a dollar goal. Is the impact goal. That’s what we as a community want to see. How are we helping families that are struggling? That’s what will make our community thrive.”

She said setting a goal to help 30,000 families, rather than setting a dollar amount, means UWCSRA is committed to measurable change for families over the long term. She said 48% of households in their 13-county service area either live in poverty or are ALICE households.

Over the past year, UWCSRA has impacted 129,950 lives, ranging from emergency rent and utility assistance, free rides booked through the Ride United partnership with Lyft, school supplies for just under 28,000 students, and Christmas gifts for nearly 2,000 children.
