Simon Says: Bad Job News & Pay in Georgia/Carolina

With the continued government shutdown and no new official economic news releases from federal agencies, I again turn to the ADP employment report for the latest jobs market data. The ADP report is based on national payroll data from more than 26 million U.S. employees, who come from ADP clients, like the ones getting serviced for payroll and HR in West August. This is about 1 in 5 private sector employees, and 1 in 6 covers total employees. The data they have does skew towards larger firms and firms located

Simon Says: ADP job survey is telling for Georgia/South Carolina

Publisher’s Note: ADP is a major employer in Augusta and has represented more than 26 million employees through payroll and HR-type services since 2010. Today, Dr. Simon Medcalfe utilizes their numbers as an alternative to Uncle Sam. Although the continued government shutdown has restricted timely economic data releases, there is still economic data to be found from other sources. The latest ADP report indicated that private employment fell by 32,000 in September (we do not have the official government data for September). This was on top of a smaller 3,000

Who can save my Social Security and yours!

I am rapidly approaching my “Full Retirement Age” (FRA) according to Social Security. While I plan on working a few more years at Augusta University, assuming my students, my bosses, and I all think I am still doing a good job, my retirement is not too far away, and Social Security is a key element of my retirement financial planning. Therefore, I have a vested interest in the long-term solvency and viability of Social Security benefits for “old age”/retirees. However, there is real concern about the future of such Social

Improvement projects underway at the airport

Motorists heading for Augusta Regional Airport notice the start of new development inside the airport property along the Doug Barnard Parkway fence line. Heavy equipment is being used to prepare for the construction of additional apron space and a new ramp. “You’re seeing a lot of dirt, that’s for sure,” Elizabeth Giles, Senior Construction Project Manager, told ABD. “We are doing the initial excavating and undercutting of dirt, because we do have to drop the elevation to build the new ramp and apron space. And the new ramp and apron

Simon Says: New Inflation Data

If you are concerned about higher prices impacting your quality of life, may I suggest an evening in sewing: sewing machines, fabric, and supplies are 6.4% cheaper than a year ago. Treat yourself to a bottle of wine (1.2% cheaper) and a pint of ice cream (0.7% cheaper). I have given a couple of community presentations recently and been asked the same question twice: Why does the inflation data not include prices of food and energy? In fact, the headline inflation figure does include food and energy, although the government

Simon Says: Augusta growing economy over last 5 years

Publisher’s Note: One of the impacts of the government shutdown is that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has not released any economic data this month. It is only scheduled to release the Consumer Price Index on October 24th to meet statutory deadlines necessary to ensure timely payment of social security benefits. That didn’t stop AU/ABD Economist, Dr. Simon Medcalfe from digging into other numbers. Other economic data is available from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, although this is based on a range of government data and is unlikely to

Simon Says: How Helene impacted job and rate of pay

Publisher’s Note: As you probably witnessed in the months following Helene’s wrath, workers were out and about helping rebuild. Damaged homes, businesses, and public infrastructure were getting rebuilt. Demand was created for construction, engineering, skilled trades, and logistical movers. Federal and relief funds stimulated recovery efforts, but how much? The numbers may surprise you. In terms of employment, both Columbia County in Georgia and Aiken County in South Carolina saw employment increase from December to March by 1.89% and 0.1% respectively. Moreover, March employment in both counties was higher than
