Governor extends gas tax suspension, local gas prices among nation’s lowest

Georgians will have at least another month to enjoy slightly lower gas prices, by order of the governor. Last week, Gov. Brian Kemp extended the suspension of the collection of the gas tax until Sept. 12. This is the third extension of the original executive order. The previous order had been set to expire at the end of this week. The gas tax in Georgia is 29.1 cents per gallon. By suspending that tax, Georgians have been able to fill up with some of the lowest gas prices in the

Beyond the commercials: What business owners and employees need to know about Medicare

If you watch TV, you’ve probably seen the likes of Joe Namath, William Shatner, and Jimmie Walker pitching Medicare supplement plans. The companies who hire them know they’ll hit home for the age group who watched them win football championships, conquer space, and make you laugh in the 1970’s. Trying to sort through the avalanche of commercials, direct mail and social media advertisements for Medicare can be more complicated than driving through Atlanta during rush hour traffic. It’s enough to make you pull out your gray hair. That is why

Simon Says: Although technically not a recession, U.S. economy is slowing

There was a great debate last week over whether the U.S. economy was in a recession. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or the total final value of all goods and services produced in the economy, fell by 0.9%. This was the second consecutive quarter of declining GDP after the first quarter contraction of 1.6%. However, the United States does not define a recession as two consecutive quarters of declining GDP. Instead, a private group of economists at the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER) determines recessions in the United States based

Simon Says: Augusta’s hospitality industry reaches a milestone

A major Augusta milestone was achieved with May’s employment data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Leisure and hospitality employment surpassed the pre-pandemic peak. There were 29,600 people employed in the leisure and hospitality sector in May. The previous peak was 28,000 in May 2019. The sector lost 11,000 jobs in the depths of the stay-at-home orders in spring 2020. Moreover, the leisure and hospitality industry now employs more workers than retail, a position it lost during the pandemic. The retail sector lost about 1,000 jobs in May. As

Stress test: One website ranks Augusta as being full of stress

If you’re feeling relaxed and at ease, maybe you know something the folks at the personal finance website WalletHub don’t. They just ranked Augusta as the 11th-most stressed city in the country. Augusta just missed the top 10, coming in slightly lower than Toledo, Ohio, but well ahead of Atlanta, which ranked 42nd. This may be a little confusing for any local residents who’ve had to drive in the traffic melee in our capital city. How could we be more stressed than that? To figure out what’s going on, we

Simon Says: Why economics majors earn more money

The average starting salary for an economics major is $65,000 according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. By contrast, sociology majors average $55,000 and political science majors average $58,270. The salary for economic majors is also higher than in any other business discipline. However, just looking at average salaries may be misleading and returns vary from student to student and college to college. Average economics salaries are also skewed because economics is the most popular major at every Ivy League school except the University of Pennsylvania. So, some
