Columbia County hangs out the “Help Wanted” sign

Columbia County is looking for employees for more than a dozen county offices and departments.

To help fill the vacancies, the county is holding a job fair on Monday, March 13. Representatives will be on hand to talk with people interested in any of the skilled-trade and professional positions and answer questions.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office will be among the departments available to talk with interested applicants.

“We’re looking for 911 dispatchers, Patrol Deputies, and Deputy Jailers,” said Major Steve Morris. “Depending on the position applied for, applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old, a high school graduate, or have a GED.”

Morris said thorough background checks will be conducted on successful applicants. He said bringing a resume would be helpful, but not mandatory.

Among the other departments that will be on hand are Fire Rescue, Library Services, Information Technology, and Parks, Recreation, and Events.

Human Resources Director, Dr. Jeff Carney said department representatives will be able to share information with those interested and will also evaluate if the person is a good fit with the county.

Columbia County Fire Rescue will be looking for potential employees at the upcoming job fair.

“They all need to be able to exhibit effective communication skills, a team-oriented attitude, a strong work ethic, and the desire to provide the best quality service to the citizens of Columbia County,” said Carney. “Experience in the field they are applying in is desired, but not necessarily required. When a department finds a very strong candidate, they make sure the candidate has an online application on file or they can send that applicant to the lobby of the job fair where laptops will be set up to complete the applications on site.”

Columbia County recently increased its minimum base pay to $15 an hour and employees get 11 paid holidays. Benefits include a retirement plan, an employee medical clinic, education tuition reimbursement, a wellness program, and the use of a fitness center.

The March 13 job fair will be at the Columbia County Exhibition Center at 212 Partnership Road in Grovetown. It will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Job descriptions and an application are available at: https://www.columbiacountyga.gov/county/jobs.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply online prior to the job fair.
