CSRA students and others interning at SRMC

More than seventy students from across the country have joined Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) this summer to be a part of its growing internship program.

The college interns will be taking on meaningful projects to help SRMC advance its mission of treating the millions of gallons of Cold War legacy radioactive waste remaining in tanks at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The students are bringing a fresh perspective to the areas of engineering, environmental science, biology, chemistry, business, communications, and more.

SRMC President and Program Manager, Tom Burns, said SRMC strives to be a cornerstone company for college students to jump-start their careers.

“These students have traveled anywhere from 10 miles down the road to 2,000 miles across the country to come work at Savannah River Mission Completion,” Burns said. “So SRMC is committed to providing a world-class internship program while ensuring that the interns can be learners first and contributors second.”

The schools represented in this year’s intern program are Augusta University, USC Aiken, Florida State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Mercer, Brigham Young, University of South Carolina, Clemson, Yale, Mississippi State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, University of Tennessee, NC State University, Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Texas A&M, Columbia Southern University, SC State University, The Citadel, Boise State, University of Kentucky (Paducah), Georgia Southern, University of Virginia, Rochester Institute of Technology, Purdue, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, West Virginia University, Charleston Southern, and Columbia International.

Every year, the return on investment in the internship program grows, according to Allison Brinkley, SRMC intern program coordinator.

“We currently have seven students in our Technical Student Program,” Brinkley said. Which means they have been able to stay with the company, working part-time, while they continued at school over the last year. And, in addition to those Technical Student Program students who returned for the summer, we have five students returning this year for their second summer internship.”

SRMC’s Technical Student Program simplifies the process of transitioning interns into new hires. The program allows select students to stay employed with SRMC after their summer internships end. As students work to finish school, they remain part-time employees of SRMC.

The summer interns will have a well-rounded experience at SRMC, including professional development sessions, facility tours, community service projects, social outings after hours, and senior management networking activities.
