Sabrina Murray, Director of Client Services for Snelling, is on the hunt for new business.
For the last 15 years, her company has placed temporary employees at Augusta Sportswear to fill customer orders.
Their client is going away, along with temporary jobs, on December 19th, after Augusta Sportswear filed a notice of shutdown with the State of Georgia.
“This time last year, business was booming and we placed 47 temps, “said Murray.
Murray said when Snelling hosted an employee appreciation event for Augusta Sportswear in August, she had just 22 of her temps working at the Grovetown facility.
She got the bad news in the last few days.
“I was told the Grovetown location and two others (out of state) are shutting down. The orders are not coming in”, she added.
As ABD reported yesterday morning, 93 employees will lose their jobs on December 19th.
On Wednesday night, ABD got word that Augusta Sportswear filed a WARN notice (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) with the State of Georgia.
Companies are required by law to provide a minimum of a 60-day notice to employees when there is a mass layoff or plant closure.
In January of 2024, Augusta Sportswear was acquired by Platinum Equity, an investment firm. A merger of other brands has taken place since.
ABD has placed calls and emails to communications and HR folks at Augusta Sportswear, and as of press time, has not heard back.
As for Snelling Staffing—when they held their party in early August for temps and full-time Augusta Sportswear employees, it was business as usual.
“We had no idea this was coming”. I hate that it is around the holidays.”
Murray will be working hard between now and then to place her 22 temps on different job sites with existing or new clients.
