It’s been more than 15 years since Gurley’s supermarket was open at 464 Greene Street in downtown Augusta.
For Kroger at 501 15th Street, it has been more than eight years since it closed.
Now, a Broad Street entrepreneur has opened the Downtown Corner Store in a modest 3,000 square foot building.
The building at 1018 Broad Street used to be “Flowers on Broad.” It’s in between an art gallery and a gift shop in an eclectic block in downtown Augusta— and a few doors down from the owner’s other retail store—Downtown Smoke Shop.

Owner, Mark Coburn, has deli slicers in the back for fresh sandwiches and offers grab-and-go Boar’s Head products—a staple at an upscale supermarket like Publix.
His shelves are stocked with name-brand products, and his Downtown Corner Store also offers refrigerated items like Milk, Eggs, and Cheese.
With 50 new apartments getting added in the future on 6th and Broad to go with hundreds of other downtown tenants—the timing may be right for a downtown grocery store.
Recently, FOX 54 News interviewed Coburn.
“We found that there’s a good number of people down here that don’t drive,” Coburn explained. “So, they would be forced to maybe get an Uber or Lyft to go to one of the big box stores. For those people, we’ve been a great help. It’s good to know that we’re doing our part to help out the community and give them fresh options—at a better price than the gas stations.”
