New mobile phlebotomy business is just what the doctor ordered

LaShanna Person understands her clients can’t always get to a lab or don’t have time to wait to have their blood drawn, so she does all the legwork for them.

Person, a certified medical assistant, and phlebotomist launched LKA Medical Services & Mobile Phlebotomy about a month ago. She meets clients at their homes, offices and other locations, collects blood samples, and delivers those samples to various labs throughout the CSRA.

“Drawing blood is something I really love to do,” said Person, who completed her training at Virginia College. “I do whatever I can to make it easier for doctors and patients.”

She said business is slow so far, but she’s getting positive feedback on social media. LKA is Person’s side hustle. She also works as a medical assistant at Augusta University. On Fridays, Person visits local businesses, such as doctors’ offices, to tell them about her services.

LaShanna Person has opened a mobile unit to draw blood for lab work.

For now, she only charges $50 to $85 depending on mileage. But once Person can begin billing health insurance, she plans to adjust her prices.

“When you have a passion to do something, it’s not always about the money,” Person said.

She can perform most types of labs, including pre-employment drug testing. In the future, she wants to add injections, flu and covid testing, and Department of Transportation physicals to her list of services. Person also plans to begin collecting vital signs from patients for telehealth appointments.

As the business grows, she would like to open her own office and hire more phlebotomists. Person plans to return to school to become a registered nurse.

“Becoming a nurse practitioner is my goal,” she said.

When Person meets clients, she said many are excited to see her.

“A lot of people are afraid to get their blood drawn,” Person said.

But she strives to make the process quick and simple. While business is slow now, Person doesn’t think it will stay that way because it’s a unique business model, and she offers a service many want.

“I knew this would be big; it’s a great idea,” Person said.
