$19 million expansion to benefit businesses and consumers in CSRA

The South Carolina Broadband Office announced a project with AT&T* to expand AT&T Fiber to more than 4,500 customer locations which will include Aiken and Edgefield counties as part of a $19 million project to deliver high-speed internet and help close the digital divide.

“AT&T’s investment in fiber infrastructure in Aiken and Edgefield Counties is an important step in continuing to advance economic growth and prosperity in the region. With AT&T Fiber, residents and small businesses will have access to the connectivity they need to connect with one another, access educational opportunities, conduct business, and succeed in today’s 21st century economy,” said Will Williams, President and CEO, Western SC Economic Development Partnership. “We are grateful for AT&T’s commitment to investing in South Carolina and for its collaboration in helping close the digital divide and ensuring that Aiken and Edgefield Counties have the connectivity to meet the demands of today and prepare for the opportunities of the future.”

“Access to high-speed internet is a critical tool for local residents and businesses of all sizes, helping them to innovate, compete, and grow. AT&T’s investment in fiber infrastructure in Aiken County will help pave the way for a more connected, economically vibrant community,” said Jim Tunison, President and CEO, Aiken Chamber of Commerce. “This is important for our county, and I look forward to the opportunities this infrastructure will bring.”

Plans call for residents and businesses to have access to superfast internet – delivering up to 5 gig speeds with symmetrical upload and download speeds. Consistently fast speeds and increased bandwidth mean customers can connect multiple devices, stream multiple entertainment sources, quickly upload content to social media, and experience ultra-low lag for pro-level gaming – all at the same time.

Extensive planning and engineering work for this project will begin immediately. The network buildout is expected to be complete by 2026.
