Augusta coffee pioneer opens new downtown location

The people who started the local coffee scene opened their third coffee shop today in downtown Augusta.

Buona Caffe opened this morning at 520 Reynolds Street. Although it’s a new location for a retail shop, the building has been home to Buona’s bean roasting since 2018. The building also serves as a warehouse, an equipment showroom, and a training classroom.

Owner, John Curry said opening a coffee shop at the location had always been part of the plan for the building, which is located next to the Augusta Museum of History and across the street from the old train depot. Buona also has locations on Central Avenue and in the Cyber Center.

“I think this end of town is starting to develop,” Curry said. “We’ve always felt a part of downtown because we started in the Saturday market.”

He noted that their location is less than a block from the start of the Riverwalk on one end and the new Fifth Street Bridge on the other, and boasts something that’s a rarity downtown – plenty of parking space. He added that residents of Old Town, just a block away, have indicated they are looking forward to having a location they can walk to.

For now, the new location will be open for limited hours, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, as well as on First Fridays 5-9 p.m. Tonight, it will feature live music for First Friday.

Curry and his wife, Pat, began roasting coffee in their kitchen in 2010 and opened their first café on Central Avenue in 2013. They located their second location in the Cyber Center when it opened. The business also supplies coffee and equipment to several restaurants and hotels in the CSRA.

He credits loyal customers for the company’s success and growth.

“When we started, there were no other roasters in town and few other places to get coffee,” Curry said.

Now, several other roasters and new coffee shops are popping up periodically. But Curry doesn’t focus on the competition.

“If you do what you do well, you don’t need to worry about other people,” he said. “We try to provide an exceptional product.”
