I tried German food for the first time in 2021, when my wife, Rebecca, and I ate at Hofbrauhaus in Helen. I’ve always been a picky eater, so sampling new foods isn’t something I do all the time, but Rebecca assured me I would like it. As usual, she was right.
We had been wanting to eat at Augsburg Haus at 4460 Washington Road next door to Smallcakes Cupcakery in Liberty Square in Evans for a while, but last Sunday, we finally decided to give it a try.
Augsburg Haus has been serving up German food for 20 years. Founder, Adolf Hermann, grew up living in Augsburg Germany. He started from a young age working with his mother cooking for their large family. This experience honed his skills in cooking in the Bavarian style. Sadly, he passed away three years ago, but his family has kept the restaurant open and continues using Adolf’s original recipes.
The restaurant wasn’t very crowded, so we were seated right away. Whenever we eat at a new restaurant, Rebecca and I like to check out the menu in advance, so we often know what we want before we get there. That was the case this time. I ordered schnitzel (breaded, fried pork) with a side of fried potatoes and a house salad, and Rebecca ordered jagerschnitzel, fried pork with brown mushroom gravy. Hers was served with German potato salad and a pasta called spaetzle.
We also wanted a beer and noticed on the menu that they served one-liter beers, which I assumed we would share, so we just ordered one. When our server delivered one very large stein to Rebecca, we ordered a second one.
The food was amazing, and the service was good. The portion sizes were so large that neither of us could finish our food, which was unusual for me. I enjoyed the rest of my dinner for lunch the next day.
Augsburg Haus is a small restaurant, but while we were there, it was mostly quiet, so I think it would be a great location for a business meeting.
As far as value goes, much like other German restaurants, such as Hofbrauhaus, the food isn’t cheap. Our meals both cost more than $20 each, and the beers cost $15 each. Our check came to about $80, which is much more than we normally spend. Augsburg Haus offers lunch portions of their meals, which are cheaper, but they aren’t available on Sunday.
Overall, the restaurant was great, and I would love to eat there again, but in the future, I will go during lunch.
