I’ve always been a picky eater, but the list of foods I won’t eat is now much shorter than it used to be. I still don’t like mayonnaise or most dishes that are made with it. My wife always tells me that mayo is little more than eggs and oil, which are both foods I eat, but so far, that hasn’t changed my mind.
My wife, Rebecca, and I recently visited Chicken Salad Chick –– one of her favorite restaurants –– in front of Kroger in the Washington Walk Shopping Center. Many of its menu items, such as chicken salad, egg salad, and pimento cheese, contain mayonnaise, but I usually order the turkey club, which contains mustard instead.
But this time, they were out of turkey, so I settled for a chicken salad sandwich with bacon and cheese on a croissant, with a side of macaroni and cheese. It wasn’t as good as my usual order, but I’ll admit it wasn’t too bad either.
Rebecca ordered two scoops of Cranberry Kelli — a mixture of chicken salad, sweetened cranberries, and slivered almonds — and one scoop of spicy pimento cheese with a side of grape salad. All meals are served with a pickle and cookie.
We were served quickly, and the employees were friendly. This time, there weren’t many people in the restaurant, but the time before that, there were people lined up all the way to the entrance. Chicken Salad Chick has plenty of seating and doesn’t get particularly loud, so I think it would be a good place to hold a business meeting.
I also think the restaurant is a great value because its prices are comparable to those of other similar eateries, such as Jason’s Deli. For example, at Chicken Salad Chick, the chicken salad and club sandwiches both cost $10.39, while Jason’s Deli serves a California club for $11.19.
I didn’t get the meal I wanted, but I still plan to return to Chicken Salad Chick. I just hope that when I do, they’re not out of turkey again.
