Business Lunch Review: Knuckle Sandwiches

Editor’s Note:
Wes Hennings never met a meal he walked away from and is an opinionated eater! Each Thursday he shares the results of a business lunch he’s had with a colleague as a way to advise our business community on the good, bad, and tasty across the CSRA. He doesn’t let ABD or the restaurant know where he is going and his opinions are his own. He grades the restaurants he visits on a 1-5 scale with “5” being outstanding. We call this our “Real Business Lunch Review”.

Today is one of those odd cases where I’m gonna tell you about a fantastic lunch you can find in downtown Augusta, but not a place where you’d necessarily want to do any business. So count this as one of the few times in your life where you actually want to receive a Knuckle Sandwich.

I actually found out about this place when I tried my hand at driving rideshare for drunk people on weekend nights. (I don’t recommend that. Writing food reviews is a much better side hustle.) A passenger got into my car with a to-go container full of their fries, and simply smelling they made me know that this was a place I had to try.

Boy, was that a great decision, and perhaps the best thing to come from being a rideshare driver in Augusta. Back then, and again now, the fries may be a side dish, but they’re the prominent reason you’ll want to try this hole in the wall next to Garden City Social on Broad Street. Loyal readers will know my penchant for judging an establishment based on the quality of French fries, and these hand-cut, well-seasoned potatoes are top of the list.

The French fries are the excellent, but the sandwiches are delicious, too.

But you’ll also get a delicious sandwich! I got the uppercut cheesesteak and my good friend ordered the black-eyed chicken. (I think you can see the sandwich name theme.) Both were excellent and very filling. My companion is typically a fellow of few words so his review: “Delicious.”

The trouble you’ll run into here is the space. There’s basically no lighting, and only three tables. Often you won’t find anyone at the counter when you walk in, because they are in the back making food as well.

And because it’s fresh, it’s often full of people waiting because it’s not particularly fast. This is why I wouldn’t necessarily consider it the best place for a business meeting. If you want take-out or a spot with your co-workers though, it’s a definite must-have.

This review almost turned out very differently, because upon walking it, we were told there were no fries – only chips. Fortunately for their score and for our stomachs, they were able to get the fryer back up and running and some potatoes into the grease.

Make sure you find Knuckle Sandwiches next time you’re looking for lunch downtown. It almost made it worth the permanent Uber puke stain in the backseat of my car to find this place.
