Simon Says: Ups and downs continue in most recent jobs report shows healthcare lagging

As I reported last week, the Augusta Metropolitan Statistical Area had a strong jobs report for November with employment increasing by 1,300 jobs. Heading into the holiday season, it was no surprise to see that half the jobs were in the leisure and hospitality industry. Retail establishments also increased employment by 100 to a record high of 30,360. That equates to an additional 3,600 jobs from pre-pandemic levels. Professional and business services increased employment by 600 jobs, to a total of 34,250 in that sector. That is a post-pandemic peak,

Simon Says: Mixed bag of labor market news for Augusta Metro area

The Georgia Department of Labor announced that the Augusta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) unemployment rate fell to 3.2% in November. However, as the news release stated, unemployment rates normally decline in November as the economy enters the holiday season. After seasonal adjustment to take account of this known trend, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis calculates the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to be 3.4%, up from 3.3% in October. This is the first seasonally adjusted increase in the unemployment rate since February 2022. There was some good labor market

Not surprisingly, arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation, and food services increased by

The business of Christmas: Americans spend billions each year

In the 1960s, both the Charlie Brown and the Grinch TV specials forewarned about the growing commercialization of Christmas. Despite their warnings, Christmas has become big business in the United States. Here are just a few facts about the business side of Christmas. • Christmas tree farms sell 25-30 million real trees each year – in 2018, it was 32 million, accounting for about $6.1 billion in sales. Holidays bring out online scammers, teens increasingly vulnerable

CSRA residents, like millions of Americans, enjoy the ease of online shopping. But that trend also brings out criminals trying to capitalize on that appeal by running scams and, surprisingly, the fastest growing victim group is teenagers. According to Social Catfish, in the past five years, the number of teenage victims of scams has increased by 1,125 percent and in 2021 resulted in a loss of $101.4 million. Those over
