Downtown Augusta is home to a growing list of retail shops, restaurants, and other businesses, thanks to the Downtown Development Authority of Augusta.
The agency was created in 1974 to oversee and promote downtown redevelopment. Its board meets monthly to discuss a variety of topics, including projects and initiatives.
ABD visited this month’s meeting, which was held on Thursday. DDA Executive Director, Margaret Woodard presented the Director’s Report and discussed current projects.
For example, as ABD previously reported, The Brunch House of Augusta plans to relocate from Greene Street to a much larger building at 15 Seventh St., the former home of the Town Tavern and Mally’s.
Woodard said as of July 31, downtown Augusta has gained 34 new businesses this year. That list includes Pho-Ramen’L, Tacocat, and Fetch 501.
“We are on track to have another good year,” she said.

Six businesses have expanded, including The Book Tavern and Broad Axe Throwing, which used to be called Source Code Escape Games. Woodard also listed some recent ribbon cuttings, such as Mellow Mushroom and the HUB for Community Innovation.
“Several more will probably be scheduled in the next month or so,” she said.
Woodard said a developer has looked at the Marion Building located at 739 Broad St. and has a few ideas for that property.
