Downtown restaurant survives Covid, revamps menu

Covid nearly forced a downtown restaurant to close its doors, which prompted its owners to make some changes.

For many years, The Bee’s Knees located at 211 10th St., was a tapas bar, but it’s now a gourmet tea and coffee shop that serves vegetarian and vegan comfort foods, according to General Manager, John Porter.

The eatery also sells a variety of non-food items, such as vintage vinyl records, CBD oils, and houseplants.

The Bee’s Knees menu includes biscuits, burrito wraps, hummus, and baked goods. The restaurant also serves alcoholic beverages, such as mimosas, beer, and wine.

“The owners decided to change things up because they’re vegetarian,” Porter said. “The restaurant’s also a little more covid-proof.”

The Bee’s Knees had to lay off some of its employees due to the pandemic, but it now has a smaller staff. While not all its customers are vegetarian or vegan, most enjoy the food. Porter said he eats meat, but he loves the menu.

“You have a lot of comfort options,” he said.

The restaurant currently hosts an art night on the third Friday of every month and drag shows on the fourth Friday.

“We’re hoping to add live music,” Porter said.

The restaurant was founded in 2002, and this isn’t the first time its owners have revamped the menu.

“The Bee’s Knees has been an ever-changing thing,” he said.

The restaurant is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit beeskneesaugusta.com/ or call 706-836-3661.
