With two thriving dental practices in the CSRA, one in Thomson and the other in Harlem, you’d think that would be enough to keep you running. For Quynh Spicer, it does, but caring for the community means addressing other needs.
Seven years ago, she and her husband and fellow dentist, Charles Spicer, took over Thomson Family Dental. Two years later, they opened Harlem Family Dental. In January, they bought into a successful home health franchise in Augusta, Home Instead.
“My family owned three home healthcare franchises in Texas, so the concept wasn’t new to me,” explained Spicer.
Dentistry and home health services are about comfort and care. Both Charles and Quynh have experience in providing dental care at assisted living facilities and at nursing homes through a program called In Home Smiles. For now, they are focused on providing home health care for those who need it.
The three levels of home health care offered by Home Instead include Companionship, Personal Care which could be housework, meal prep, hygiene, and transportation, and Specialty Care focusing on those with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
“The clients we have – and they prefer client as opposed to patient – love the familiarity and comfort of being in their home. They are much happier as opposed to being in a facility, although if needed, we have staff who can accompany them to an assisted living or memory care facility.”
At some point down the road, the Spicer’s would like to offer in-home dental services to their Home Instead clients. Both the dental and home health care fields are growing, especially home health care. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 22 percent growth in the next few years with an estimated 684,000 openings for home health and personal aides.
The Spicer’s are very involved in the Georgia Dental Association and locally Quynh is active with the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Columbia County Chamber where she graduated from the Leadership Class of 2020.
“As a mother of four, I like for our kids to see the impact of their parents and our work ethic and how we give back to the community. My husband and I like being good role models for them.”
Their next opening and expansion are in the works. The current location of the Thomson Family Dental office is 540 W. Hill Street. They hope to break ground soon with a new office at 1350 Washington Road in Thomson.
“We are building a new practice location, but also a complex of buildings that can house other medical offices. The goal is to have it completed by early 2025.”
