Faith Friday: Augusta native turns pain into passion through pouring candles

The global coronavirus pandemic hit Quita Gibson doubly hard. She lost both of her grandmothers within two months, and depression sought to steal her spirit. She knew if she didn’t activate her faith quickly, she would not recover.

Empowered by her elders’ lives and legacies, she became intentional about self-care and healing. However, it came in the form of something she would not only benefit from, but also for others: Candles.

“I started Light of Grace Candle Company, LLC, in June 2021 as a way to remember my grannies,” the 45-year-old Augusta native recalled. “My company’s name is in honor of my Granny Grace, and one of the hand-poured scents is named in honor of my Granny Katie. It started as my way of paying the love I have for candles forward as a gift to some friends. A few candles have evolved into a simple, elegant brand consisting of hand-poured, soy-blended fragrances to calm your senses and set your desired mood.”

Quita Gibson beat cervical cancer and depression to start her candle-making business.

Gibson, a cervical cancer survivor, provides wickless candles, wax melts, and an assortment of electrical candles and wax warmers, with new products to be added soon.

Wickless candles can be a great alternative for those who are uncomfortable with flame. Without the wick, there is no black smoke or soot, and they’re great for areas where candles are not allowed such as office spaces.

Gibson takes seriously her mission of bringing light to one’s sense of smell, self-care, serenity, self-awareness, and meditation. It’s the light of God’s love that keeps the flame of faith burning far beyond the candles.

Katie’s Ruby was named after Gibson’s grandmother to symbolize love, passion and prosperity.

“I run a faith-based business focusing on teaching, reproof, correction, and righteousness training, so I am competent and equipped to create an exemplary work environment,” she said. “Integrating faith and business keeps you motivated when times get hard. It’s not always easy to align your faith and beliefs into your company; however, I trust God to use my business for good, because I focus on relationship building and serving others.”

Sharing her passion for her products with others motivated her to expand candle-making beyond personal joy. It’s now creating a legacy.

“I walk by faith not by sight, so I am confident in knowing my business will continue to elevate throughout the years ahead,” Gibson said. “Whether I make no sale, one sale, or 20 a day, I take pride in the product I put out and value my customers that choose my products. I know there are thousands of other candle makers they could choose to patronize.”

Gibson can smile knowing her business helped her heal from depression.

More than dollars, the scents Gibson creates are done so to share the love she feels God has blessed her with. It strengthens her to create a legacy of faith, she said, which comes from being diligent and intentional in your relationship with the Lord.

“I hope to leave a legacy of love, strength, faith, generosity, forgiveness, creativity, purpose, and vision,” she said.
