Faith Friday: Battling the Odds through Brunch

Since being diagnosed with kidney failure four years ago, Asian Brown, founder of The Brunch House of Augusta, lives by this rule: “You never know when it will be your last day, so live every day to the fullest.” In fact, not knowing if he would live or die inspired him to open the quaint breakfast and lunch spot in downtown Augusta just under one year ago. “Faith is the ultimate reason the restaurant is prospering and successful,” said Brown.

Brunch House boasts specializing in comfort food that excites your taste buds

The full service eatery—in the former “Whistle Stop Café”—located at 573 Greene Street across from the Augusta-Richmond Municipal Building, is not big at all. Its part-diner-part-family reunion-in-the-kitchen feel has become a staple in the heart of a bustling downtown area, where similar set-ups are few and far between. Sure, the loud chatter of guests, children’s laughter and clanging of dishes are audible, but it seems to blend right in with a warm and upbeat atmosphere. “Our motto at Brunch House is treating customers like family by serving them food made with love,” said the 2016 Augusta University alum. That “love” comes in the form of some of the business’s signature dishes, including salmon croquettes, shrimp & grits and chicken & waffles. The “Open” sign was turned on February 1, 2021.

“Since I did not have much restaurant experience prior to this journey, faith has kept the business afloat,” Brown said.  “We opened our doors during the pandemic and supply shortage. Faith made me realize we can only control what we can control. We were able to run our business successfully and have supplies even during this devastating time. Our faith aligns with our business, making impossible situations possible. I’m grateful every month is better than the last month.”

A newbie to the food service industry, significant health challenges and a global pandemic seem like a recipe for disaster.

However, added ingredients of faith, hard work and service seem to be a recipe for success, the owner says is exemplified in the tagline: Family Feeding Families.
