Famous toy shop reopens in Augusta, nationwide

Maybe you didn’t want to grow up because you were a Toys “R” Us kid. But you can now shop for your own kids at the iconic toy store by visiting Macy’s in the Augusta Mall.

Macy’s has partnered with a company called WHP Global to bring the Toys “R” Us brand to all its stores throughout the United States, according to a company spokeswoman, Stephanie Jimenez. Jimenez said the Augusta store opened its nearly 1,500-square-foot shop, which is located on the lower level, on Aug. 1.

“Since last August, Macy’s customers have been able to shop online for the expansive assortment of Toys “R” Us products,” she said. “Partnering with Toys “R” Us has elevated the digital shopping experience, bringing additional brand names to the Macy’s platform and providing an opportunity to curate an online and in-store experience for the toys’ customer.”

Jimenez said the toy shops include a variety of features, including demonstration tables and a life-size Geoffrey the Giraffe, the company’s mascot, sitting on a bench.

Founded by Charles Lazarus in 1948, Toys “R” Us was originally called Children’s Bargain Town. Lazarus changed its name in 1957. At one time, the company had about 1,500 stores worldwide, but it went bankrupt in 2017 and closed most of its stores the following year.

For many years, a Toys “R” Us store was located in front of the mall at 3424 Wrightsboro Road. That building is now occupied by Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.

Jimenez said the brand rollout began at the end of July and lasted until Oct. 15.

“Toys “R” Us kids of all ages can now shop an incredible assortment of toys in Macy’s stores, on the app, and online at macys.com/s/toys-r-us/,” she said.
