Matt Gregory’s next personal and professional move from Atlanta makes perfect sense. His wife’s from Augusta. His young children will transfer from Primrose School in Atlanta to one the Gregory’s are building in Martinez.
He’ll run the day-to-day and call on his experience doing consulting work for an early education school in Atlanta.
“Everybody kept telling us there was a strong need for premium early childhood education options. There is a lot of growth in Columbia County.”
Gregory is building the Primrose School on about two acres just off Flowing Wells Road at 445 Old Anderson Road.
There are nearly 600 Primrose Schools across the United States.
The Gregory’s say they fell in love with Primrose in Atlanta during the time their children attended. They like the curriculum that prepares children for grade school along with the structure.
Gregory’s wife, a landscape architect with a firm in Atlanta, will oversee the design around the land.
Already in place is a huge backyard with turf and an age-appropriate playground.
“Each classroom has its own door outside. It’s really nice that you know your children are going out with their age group on equipment that’s specifically designed for them,” said Gregory.
Primrose Augusta will have several, separate classes from infants to pre-K. “We’re in a healthy place,” Gregory tells ABD; some age groups are already on a wait list for parents.
The capacity for the entire school is just north of 200 children.
Gregory is installing a commercial-grade kitchen with high-end appliances.
Parents’ tuition includes breakfast, lunch, and three snacks a day for their children.
Gregory is putting his high-end, hospitality background to good use.
“I’ve got my master’s in industrial design from Georgia Tech, and part of that world is an offshoot called service design.”
Gregory has always enjoyed mapping out the consumer experience and will now try to satisfy the taste of children mostly under five.
Primrose is also seeking candidates with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a child development associate (CDA) or a technical equivalent. Assistant teachers are not required to have that credential. Beyond the standard experience level, Gregory is looking for a certain type of person he’s worked with before in the hospitality space.
