Hull College of Business: The importance of soft skills

Training comes in different forms— very hands-on in the manufacturing world—high tech in the Cyber world, etc.

What about the presentation part of getting the job?

Today, Dr. Mark Thompson, Dean of AU’s School of Business, explains new developments in helping prepare students for the real world.

ABD: Mark, how are you retooling your academic center to get the students ready for their careers?

MARK: So, the Business School has a Career and Academic Planning Center, and historically, it has served our students by providing one-on-one advising, one-on-one in terms of career advice, one-on-one, type, meetings with internships and employers.

And one of the things that we continuously hear from employers is this need for professional skill development.

And so, while we’ll do a lot of those same functions that we’ve done before, we really want to elevate the programming that we provide.

And so, really get into much more professional development, oral communication, mock interviews, and really provide our students to really be career-ready by the time they graduate.
