International supermarket chain to open Columbia County location

An international discount supermarket chain has announced it will open its third CSRA location, this time in Evans.

Germany-based Lidl plans to build the more than 30,000-square-foot grocery store at 4285 Washington Road, across the street from Publix in Evans Towne Centre.

“We are in the early stages of development for our future store in Evans, and it is too early to offer a timeline for opening at this time,” said Lidl US Public Relations Manager, Chandler Spivey.

The company, which sells a variety of products, including meat, produce, baked goods, and household items, already has stores located on Alexander Drive in Augusta and East Martintown Road in North Augusta.

According to the Lidl website, about 80 percent of its products are private label, which typically cost less than name-brand products.

Founded in 1973 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Lidl began with three employees and about 500 items. It now has more than 11,000 locations in 32 countries and employs about 341,000 people worldwide.

In 2015, Lidl established its U.S. headquarters in Arlington. Two years later, the company opened its first U.S. stores in Virginia and the Carolinas. For more information, visit lidl.com.
