Local businesses sponsor annual turkey giveaway

Taylor BMW is one of many local businesses that sponsor the annual James Brown Turkey Giveaway, which the Hardest Working Man in Show Business began, close to 30 years ago.

“The reason we continue to support the James Brown Turkey Giveaway is simple: It is a tradition in our community started years ago by James Brown, and I didn’t want to see it end with his passing,” said the dealership’s General Manager, Edward Luckey. “I really believe we have to give back to the community where we live, work, and raise our families.”

This year’s giveaway is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21 beginning at 8 a.m. in the James Brown Arena parking lot. For individuals or businesses wishing to donate, click here.

Ever since the singer died on Christmas Day 2006, the James Brown Family Foundation has kept the tradition going.

“We’ve given away hundreds of turkeys in the past,” the Foundation said in a statement.

They won’t know how many turkeys will be given away until they receive all registrations. Other sponsors include DeShawn’s Seafood & Chicken, the Chandler Law Firm, and Val-U Furniture located on Beech Island.

Luckey said that at Thanksgiving, it’s especially important to help those who are less fortunate.

“I think the James Brown Turkey Giveaway is a great charity for us to support because the support we give is helping those in our community,” he said.

Recipients of the Turkey Giveaway must register. Registration is required and will take place at May Park located at 622 Fourth St. from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow, as well as on Nov. 5 and Nov. 12. To register, individuals must submit a valid state ID and either a current electric bill or lease agreement.
