Local entrepreneur hopes to hit target with mobile axe-throwing business

Some business names aren’t very memorable, but that certainly can’t be said about the provocative name Jeremy McRae has chosen for his new business.

McRae, the owner of CSRA Kayak Rentals, just launched Kiss My Sexy Axe, a mobile axe-throwing business. He originally wanted to call it Kiss My Axe, but he discovered that name was already being used by businesses in other states. When McRae first heard about mobile axe-throwing, he was interested in the activity for strictly personal reasons.

“I was thinking about something fun to do at parties,” McRae said.

But after doing some research, he decided to start the business and built a red trailer with two targets that can be rented for various events, such as company parties and family celebrations. McRae said there are other mobile businesses like his in the Augusta area, but their trailers don’t resemble his.

“I wanted mine to stand out and be different from others,” he said. “I wanted it to look like something you would want to take pictures of.”

McRae charges $400 for the first two hours and $100 for each hour after that. He often shows his customers the correct way to throw an axe at a target, which doesn’t require as much force as many think.

“You don’t have to throw an axe very hard to get it to stick,” McRae said.

The minimum age is generally 12, but he sometimes allows younger children to throw on a case-by-case basis. McRae also has a toy axe-throwing set they can use. Before he officially launched the business, he decided he had to try it for himself.

“I knew I would like it, and I knew it was a growing business,” McRae said. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset.”

So far, the feedback he’s received has been positive.

“They think it’s an amazing idea,” McRae said. “Everyone loves the name and the trailer.”

About eight years ago, he started CSRA Kayak Rentals, which he runs with the help of his 13-year-old son, Carson. McRae also has a shuttle van he uses to take people on Christmas light tours every year. While those businesses are seasonal, he said axe-throwing should be a year-round business. Running multiple businesses simultaneously isn’t easy, so he plans to hire employees for the kayak business and Kiss My Sexy Axe. But he doesn’t mind having a busier schedule.

“I have to be busy at all times; I can’t stay still,” McRae said.
