Local restaurant group gives back to community for Thanksgiving

Next week, people across the CSRA will gather with family and friends for a traditional Thanksgiving feast. With the rising cost of groceries, some families can’t afford a turkey, but a group of local restaurants is teaming up to help these families enjoy a holiday meal.

Ramiro Galvan, who owns Taqueria El Rey on Washington Road in Martinez, La Cocina Del Rey on Lewiston Road in Grovetown, and The Munchies Lab on Walton Way in Augusta, said all three restaurants will host turkey giveaways Monday beginning at 11 a.m.

Galvan, who is in his sixth year of hosting the giveaways, said they will provide one turkey per household while supplies last. This year, due to limited supply and higher prices, they will give away a total of 200 turkeys. Last year, Taqueria El Rey and La Cocina Del Rey gave away 233. The Munchies Lab opened in July 2022.

“The reason we do this and help our community every chance we get is we know what it’s like to barely make ends meet,” he said.

According to an article from CBS News, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report last month that said the supply of turkeys will be limited for the rest of 2022 and the first half of 2023 due to an illness called Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

“Turkey prices are up significantly over last year due to HPAI,” the article said.
