Local watersports business to host a community event on the river Sunday

Dayon Walker wants to provide a day of fun and education for the local community, which is why he’s hosting the second annual Cooler Fest on Sunday.

Walker, the owner of Reserve and Ride Watersports, which offers guided jet ski tours of the Savannah River, said the all-day, family-friendly event will also include food, music, horse rides, as well as water slides. It will be held at 105 Riverfront Drive in Augusta near the Boathouse Community Center.

He’s offering free entry for anyone donating book bags or fall/winter clothing, which will be distributed to underserved children in East Augusta. Reserve and Ride has formed partnerships with two schools located in that area: W.S. Hornsby Elementary and Middle schools.

Walker uses his jet ski tours to teach riders about local history. For example, Walker discusses the local slave trade. He said Cooler Fest is a great way to get people together and educate them at the same time.

“I offer Black history tours of the Savannah River,” he said. “It’s more than just a jet ski ride.”

Walker already has some vendors signed up, but he’s currently looking for more. They can even show up on the day of the event. Food vendors will pay a fee of $100, while non-food vendors will pay $50. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own tents for $25.

“We have space allotted, and we want everybody to be involved,” Walker said.

He’s excited about hosting a large event at the river again this year.

“Last year, we had a great turnout with about 300 people throughout the day,” Walker said.

Cooler Fest will last from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. To sign up as a vendor or for more information, email augustariverfrontevents@gmail.com.
