Medal of Honor recipient addresses Chamber event

Editor’s Note: Former ABD contributor, Ret. Major General Perry Smith frequently wrote about lessons which can be applied to business from military leadership, especially Medal of Honor recipients. Today offers an excellent opportunity to hear from a winner.

The Military Appreciation Executive Luncheon, sponsored by Piedmont Augusta, will feature Specialist Five James C. McCloughan, a distinguished Medal of Honor recipient.

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, North Augusta Chamber, Greater Augusta Black Chamber, and AUSA-Fort Eisenhower Chapter will host the event at Savannah Rapids Pavilion today, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.

After success as a high school and college athlete, McCloughan was drafted into the Army at the age of 22. His training in athletics and coaching gave him a foundational knowledge of sports medicine, and his leaders took notice. Two months after arriving at basic training, he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to complete advanced training as a medical specialist. On his last day of training, McCloughan received deployment orders to Vietnam. He was assigned as a combat medic with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, and America Division.
