More than 1,000 STEM students are one step closer to a career in Cyber-related fields. The recent class stepped into a larger venue in downtown Augusta to make room for the influx.
102 students are wrapping up their CyberPatriot advanced camp week on Friday.
More than 100 others attended the standard camp course in late June. All told, more students have attended this basic CyberCamp in Augusta than anywhere else in the United States.
The Alliance for Fort Gordon says it had to move this year’s camp to a larger venue at the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center next to the Augusta Marriott Hotel.
“This training is critically important for cyber education for both regional and national security. Fort Gordon provides the instructors for our camps, and I tell our campers that they are the world’s best – it’s kind of like having your 16-year-old being taught to drive by Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon,” said Dr. Tom Clark, who runs the Alliance for Fort Gordon.
“Basic camp” features an intro to Cybersecurity, an intro to virtual machines, Windows 10, and Mint in a flexible curriculum designed to meet middle school and high school students’ interests and needs. It concluded with a CyberPatriot competition on the final day. There is no charge for camp.
In 2018, the Alliance for Fort Gordon’s youth cyber-education program was designated a CyberPatriot Center of Excellence. The designation by the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot Program Office made the local program the 15th in the nation – and the only in Georgia and South Carolina – to receive the honor.
The Alliance for Fort Gordon promotes, coordinates, and advocates for the “Fort Gordon Cyber District” to stimulate investment in cyber growth and capitalize on opportunities for the benefit of all. For more information, email Tom Clark at tom.clark@fortgordonalliance.
