New Medical Practice reunites Doctor with family in the CSRA

Three siblings. Three Augusta doctors. Three different specialists at three different practices.

Dr. David Squires (far left) is the oldest sibling, who is an oncologist at AO Multi-Specialty Clinic and is a proud big brother.

“I am thrilled that my brother and sister chose to practice medicine here in Augusta. When I refer patients to them, I am confident they will receive exceptional care,” he said.

Cynthia Murray, Family MD practices a few doors down from her brother, David at Urgent MD—Med Now.

In November 2023, Dr. Stephen Squires opened ProSynergy Dermatology behind the GMC campus on Davis Road in the former 11,250-square-foot Brenau University building. It is one of his two CSRA offices.

He’d practiced in Augusta for many years, before spending 2021-23 in Philadelphia and Kansas City completing skin cancer and cosmetic dermatology fellowships.

“Well, my family is here. And, you know, I call it home,” said the dermatologist.

Squires’ comprehensive practice includes:

  • Skin cancer screening and treatments
  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Botox
  • Skin Surgery
  • General Dermatology
  • Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Moh’s surgery is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed a method for treating skin cancer lesions.  During this process, a Mohs surgeon removes thin pieces of skin one stage at a time and examines it under a microscope to determine if the margins are clear. This procedure continues until cancer-free margins are obtained. By examining 100% of the tumor margin, it spares healthy tissue and has up to a 99% cure rate for primary skin cancers, and up to a 94% cure rate for recurrent tumors. The goal is to leave the smallest defect possible, while also eliminating skin cancer completely. It is usually done in a single visit in an outpatient office setting under local anesthesia.

Dr. Squires says he and his team of 10 live out his new brand. “Everybody is truly a professional in my organization and every single person is valued. It’s not just about the doctor, it’s about patients. It’s about multidisciplinary care and collegiality. The whole idea behind health care is accessibility. We get rid of skin cancers quickly and treat illnesses quickly. We try to help patients one step at a time. I’m going to do my best at this moment for this individual. It is the front desk, it’s the employees, it’s the way that people feel. And so, if you take care of people, then they feel good. And, you know, you do the best you can for everyone. So, that’s the ProSynergy brand.”

Dr. Squires says opening his second office in the heart of North Augusta in early March 2024, continues his goal of making health care accessible—filling a dermatological need between Aiken and Evans.

He’s very proud of his Physician’s Assistants with ties to the North Augusta community. Providers Ben Kilpatrick, PA-C, and Michelle Nye, PA-C are like family to Dr. Squires, a feeling that has been integrated into his love of medicine for decades.

“David had a lot of impact on us. When he was 24, he was diagnosed with leukemia. And that drove him into oncology. I always thought I was going to be an oncologist. But in medical school, I fell in love with dermatology, the visualization, the skin cancer, there’s infection, there’s rashes, you can see it, you can take care of it. My sister was also influenced by my brother, but she wanted to go into family medicine.”

“When I text or call him about dermatologic problems that my patients have, he answers my questions and sees the patient promptly. The next time I see the patients, they tell me how impressed they were with him and his staff,” said his big brother, Dr. David Squires.
