New packaged beverage store opens on Furys Ferry

The old sitcom Cheers portrayed a bar where everyone knew your name. Cheers in Evans is a package liquor store and, while they may not know your name yet, they do offer a wide selection of beer, wine and liquor.

Cheers opened at the corner of Evans to Locks and Furys Ferry roads last Thursday. It is a new project by the Patel brothers who own several Dunkin Donuts and other stores in the Augusta area.

“We’re going to try to be a nice, clean store with great customer service,” manager Lee Neel said.

Although open just a few days, Neel said they’ve been happy with the turnout.

The store contains 16 rows of various liquors, juicers and mixers, plus 14 cooler doors for chilled beer and wine, and a beer cave for packages larger than a 12-pack. Their offerings include a range of products from around Georgia, including some from Augusta, such as Durty Gurl cocktail mixers located just down Evans to Locks from Cheers. But they’re open to adding more products.

“We’re big on customer requests and we’ll try our best to get that in,” said employee Pete Patel.

And it’s not just two-legged customers who are allowed access to the store.

“We’re dog friendly,” Neel said, “Dogs on a leash are given water and treats.”

Cheers is open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 12:30-7 p.m. Sunday.
