New restaurant answers the call for country cookin’

Greg Pierce has his finger on the pulse of the CSRA when it comes to food. He already owns The Feed Sack in Aiken which opened a couple of years ago. A year later, he opened the second location of the popular eatery in North Augusta.

Two weeks ago, Pierce opened a new restaurant, The Proper Plate, at 119 Laurens Street in Aiken.

“Everybody kept telling me there is no longer an option for country cooking around town or a meat and three as many folks call it. So, we opened The Proper Plate to satisfy the need,” said Pierce.

The meats and vegetables include southern favorites like meatloaf, fried chicken, Shephard’s Pie, macaroni and cheese, collards, and squash casserole. Salads and desserts round out the menu.

“The Proper Plate doesn’t require the number of staff as The Feed Sack. We scoop the food for you as you go down the line. So far, the response has been incredible.”

If you need to eat on the go as a busy businessperson, Pierce has that covered with box lunches to go for $10.

Pierce has also been blessed to avoid some of the struggles of his competitors. His wife, Angie, and two adult children, Wyatt and Clary, help to manage the three restaurants.

“Good help is hard to find in this business. It’s nice to have family running the restaurants that I can trust.”

The latest venture for the Pierce family is probably not the last.

Greg Pierce and his family own and operate two Feed Sack locations, one in Aiken and the other in North Augusta.

“I already have another location in mind and a different concept. I just don’t want to move too fast.”

You can follow The Proper Plate on Facebook or to see their menu. They are open 11:00 am until 8:00 pm, seven days a week.
