In 2020, Shanteka Glover was selected as one of the Top 10 in 10 Young Professionals to Watch and Georgia Trend Magazine’s 40 under 40 award recipient.
Glover, senior IT technical and business analyst for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, attended this month’s Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce Member Economic Luncheon yesterday. She has a passion for helping the next generation of business leaders.
“If our youth can see, they can be it,” Glover said. “We must allow them to stand on our shoulders to reach greater achievements.”
The luncheon honored 2022 Top 10 in 10, which were selected by the Chamber and Augusta Magazine. Phil Olaleye, Executive Director of the Atlanta Nonprofit Next Generation Men & Women and a newly-elected Georgia State Representative, served as the guest speaker.
His presentation was called “Creating a Culture of Opportunity.” In his role with the nonprofit, Olaleye helps to create opportunities for high school students throughout the Atlanta area. Next Generation Men & Women offers after-school programs and both college and career counseling services.
In his presentation, he discussed opportunities that have been presented to him. Olaleye, the son of immigrant parents, never thought college would be an option for him. That was until a friend’s mom he affectionately refers to as Ms. Brenda, urged him to apply.
When he received a letter from the college, he assumed it was a rejection letter. Instead, it was an invitation to visit the campus for a weekend. That weekend, Olaleye learned he had been accepted to Duke University. He graduated and went on to earn a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Olaleye now creates differences for young people, who, like himself, don’t think a college is an option for them.
“There is nothing more exciting for a young person than to have a vision of the future that excites them and have the resources available to make it a reality,” he said.
The nonprofit seeks to provide those resources and build the next generation of business leaders.
