Regional blood center to open Augusta donation site

Doctors Hospital will have an easier time getting the blood it needs, thanks to a blood bank coming to Augusta.

The Blood Connection, a non-profit organization that supplies blood to Doctors, plans to open a new donation center less than a mile from the hospital at 3156 Perimeter Parkway, Suite 201.

For hospitals, maintaining a steady blood supply is critical, as it’s often needed for surgical patients, accident victims, and other medical necessities.

The center will be TBC’s second Georgia facility; the other is in Savannah. The nonprofit, which was formerly called Carolina-Georgia Blood Center, also has 10 locations in South Carolina, such as Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Lexington.

In July, The Blood Connection announced its partnership with Doctors Hospital. The donation center will employ a team of phlebotomists, donor recruiters, and other workers. It will also have bloodmobiles that will travel to blood drives throughout the CSRA.

Over the last year, the nonprofit has experienced low donor turnout, but it has still honored its commitments to provide blood for hospitals throughout the region. CSRA businesses will have the opportunity to help TBC by hosting blood drives.

“The Blood Connection is proud to expand its impact in the Central Savannah River Area with this new donation site in Augusta,” said the nonprofit’s President and CEO, Delisa English. “We are excited to give the people of Augusta another opportunity to make a difference in their community.”

It will join Shepeard Community Blood Center, the American Red Cross, and other agencies to collect blood for local hospitals.
