Reporter likes new, unique restaurant in North Augusta

A new restaurant in North Augusta offers its customers a healthier alternative to the traditional fast-food hamburger.

Dawg! That’s Vegan – located at 1696 Knox Avenue near Georgia Avenue, had its soft opening on Thursday, Sept. 30. The restaurant serves a full menu of vegetable-based burgers that taste much like the real thing, as well as French fries and sodas. While it’s only been open a few days, business has been booming, according to Danny Everett, the husband of Angel, the business’s owner. “I can’t believe the amount of people who have come in in such a short time,” says Danny. “We’ve had people drive over an hour.” The burger patties are made from a variety of vegetables, such as beets, and coconut oil.

My wife, Rebecca, and I visited Dawg! That’s Vegan on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 2. I’m not a big fan of fast food, though I enjoy Taco Bell every once in a while. As Rebecca can attest, I’m a very picky eater, so I normally order my burger without certain toppings, particularly mayonnaise and tomatoes. All menu items are freshly prepared by Angel, so you’ll never eat a day-old, reheated burger. I chose the Smokin’ Choice, a patty topped with barbecue sauce, as well as vegan bacon and cheese.

It was so delicious, I wished I had ordered two, but I plan to revisit Dawg! That’s Vegan in the near future. Rebecca ordered a burger called the Dawgtastic Vegan Classic, which is topped with lettuce, pickles, and a secret sauce. The restaurant doesn’t have tables, so we enjoyed our meal in the car. For some restaurant goers that could be a drawback.

Like me, she loved it. “It was my first time trying a vegan burger, and it was delicious,” Rebecca explains. The menu also includes a build-your-own-burger option that allows customers to choose a variety of toppings, such as mushrooms, jalapenos, and even pineapple.

The soft opening hours are Thursday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit dawgthatsvegan.com.
