In 1995, Ricky Moore led the Westside High School basketball team to victory in the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAA tournament. Moore also played for the University of Connecticut and helped the team win the national championship in 1999.
He will host a tournament at his alma mater, Friday evening and wants local businesses to sponsor it.
Six teams will compete in the Ricky Moore Invitational. Lucy C. Laney High School will compete against Jones County High School at 5:30 p.m., Augusta Christian Schools will take on Butler High School at 7 p.m. and Grovetown High School will play Westside High School at 8:30 p.m.
Augusta Christian, Grovetown, and Westside won their state championship tournaments this year.
Sponsorships range from $150 to $2,000, and proceeds will be given to participating schools. Advertising Solutions President, Zina McNeil, who has been a fan of Moore since he played high school basketball, is helping to promote the event, and said today is the last day to sign up as a sponsor for the tournament.
She said as of Monday evening, two local businesses – Terry Lambert Hyundai in North Augusta and the Mike Hostilo Law Firm in Augusta – had signed up to sponsor the event.
“It’s important because the dollars are being used to support athletes here in the CSRA,” McNeil said.
