Sporting events bringing millions to local economy

Dr. Jermaine Whirl helped Augusta greatly as President of Augusta Tech. Now, his new school will be helping to bring an estimated $1.1 million in economic impact to Augusta.

Savannah State University and its fans will be coming to Lucy C. Laney Stadium for the Good Trouble Heritage Classic.

The weekend celebration is from October 17-19, with the culmination being a football game between two historically black universities (HBCU).

The game got the attention of ESPN, as ESPN+ is broadcasting the game across the country.

Destination Augusta and the Augusta Sports Council estimate that 8,000 people will visit the Garden City for the festivities that weekend.

Earlier that week, Augusta is hosting the 2025 USSSA Military World Softball Tournament.

The organizations estimate that more than 4,000 people will attend and circulate a bit more than $3 million into the local economy.

Destination Augusta and the Augusta Sports Council announced on Friday that the 15,230 visitors attending meetings, reunions, events, and sporting events in Augusta’s River Region will generate at least $5,635,760 in total estimated economic impact (EEI) in October 2025.
