Founded in 1866 in Hamburg, Germany, Aurubis Richmond, is the first multi-metal recycling center for complex materials in the United States and is housed in the state of Georgia, right here in the Garden City!

Since its groundbreaking in June 2022, the plant has been making history ever since.

HR Director, Patrick Raley says that making Georgia the home for the facility just made sense.

“Georgia just made sense for a number of reasons,” Raley commented. “Logistically, we are close to various ports and able to source the recycled materials we need. The welcoming and assistance from Governor Kemp and local officials made it an easy choice.”

Lead HR Generalist, Tashara Johnson explains how the partnership with Aurubis is a win-win for all involved, with tremendous economic impacts on the local CSRA economy as well.

“Our payroll alone puts over $20M annually into the pockets of families in the CSRA,” explained Johnson.  “We also are utilizing a number of local vendors and suppliers to provide basic day-to-day services for the plant.”

They are already a large employer and are working to become an even larger employer here in the CSRA. Johnson says they have already hired just over 100 employees and are looking to hire 100 more in the coming year.

The plant will be able to open new opportunities for the CSRA in many ways in the world of technology.

“The technology being used at this facility is the first of its kind in the United States,” said Raley. “We will be able to recover copper from materials that were previously destined for landfills. As copper is now on the critical minerals list, it will put Augusta on the map for providing this key resource from existing material already in the U.S.”

Aurubis Richmond’s growth ambition is to become the largest fully integrated copper producer in North America. The management team has quarterly goals in place through Q4 of 2025. They say the sky is the limit for this developing venture.

“We are the largest German investment in the state of Georgia, and we hope to grow our presence here in the near future,” comments Johnson. “We expect that we will see other European companies follow us here to the CSRA when they see what a great region this is to live and work.”

Be sure to come by and visit with Tashara Johnson and the Aurubis Richmond team as they will have a booth at our upcoming Inspire 2024 Spring Conference on April 30th, from 7:30 am-11:00 am at the Hyatt House in Downtown Augusta. They would love to discuss all the exciting jobs they have available and their plans for the future of recycling in the great state of Georgia.  To order tickets, use the ABDMembers15 code and click HERE.
