Texas-based salad restaurant company plans franchises in Augusta locations

A growing restaurant chain plans to expand by launching new franchise locations in Augusta, possibly as early as next year, according to Julie Davis.

Davis, Vice President of franchise development for Salata Salad Kitchen, said the Houston-based company already has 10 locations throughout the Atlanta area. But based on market research and Augusta’s demographics, particularly population density and income, she said the city would be an ideal place to expand its brand.

Salata is currently looking for franchisees who want to open locations in this area.

“We’re looking to connect with brokers and developers,” Davis said.

The company serves customizable salads and wraps made with a customer’s choice of more than 50 freshly prepared toppings, as well as soups. Unlike at a typical salad bar, a crew member creates each customer’s meal.

“That whole interaction is what customers love,” she said.

Salata also offers vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a variety of handmade salad dressings.

“I have customers tell me ‘I eat there five days a week,’ so we’re doing something right,” Davis said.

Whenever possible, the company reduces franchise costs by moving into existing buildings rather than constructing new ones. Salata doesn’t require as many employees as some other restaurants.

“You don’t have to have a chef or a line cook,” she said. “You don’t have to have those skilled kitchen positions.”

Davis said franchisees often report enjoying a greater sense of work-life balance, and the company provides various types of support, including coaching on how to lower food costs and marketing.

She has already spoken to a few potential franchisees and hopes others will express interest in bringing their brand to Augusta.

“Conservatively, there’s an opportunity for three locations, which would drive about 60 jobs,” Davis said.

She said throughout the Southeast, Salata could open 100 or more new franchise locations in the future. Founded in 2005 by Berge Simonian, the company currently has 87 locations in five states.

Davis said the time it takes to launch a new franchise location varies depending on many factors, such as commercial real estate availability, but it typically happens within one year.

“It’s just an exciting time,” she said. “We’re applying more data-driven results to our development.”
