Two area schools develop new college degree pathway to support cybersecurity

Patrick Reynolds is always on the lookout for talented information technology and cybersecurity graduates.

Patrick Reynolds – president and chief executive officer of Cross Link Consulting – likes a new pathway for students in Augusta Technical College’s cybersecurity degree program who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in information technology at Augusta University.

Reynolds – president and chief executive officer of Cross Link Consulting – and his staff manage their clients’ IT needs, including protecting valuable data. Cross Link is one of ABD’s strategic partners, and he reviews all cyber-related stories. Reynolds reviewed a new pathway for graduates of ATC’s Associate of Applied Science program in cybersecurity who want to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology at AU. “It’s great to see an easy migration path for technology students between ATC and AU,” he states.

This new pathway is the result of a partnership between administrators from both institutions and the Georgia Cyber Center, including AU President Dr. Brooks Keel (see photo above) and ATC President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “Students completing both their associate and bachelor’s degree will be technically astute and research oriented to solve global problems in the ever-changing world of cybersecurity,” says Whirl. Students from both programs take classes at the Georgia Cyber Center located off Reynolds Street in downtown Augusta. The center has an internship coordinator who helps students find internships to gain real-world experience in the industry. “Technology students at any level should vigorously pursue hands-on and applied learning opportunities to reinforce classroom instruction,” Reynolds explains.

To apply for the pathway, ATC students must complete their institution’s transient application. These students are also required to pass challenge exams with a score of 70 or above to receive credit for required classes in the bachelor’s degree program.
