ABD: You have a very diverse faculty that is part of the whole college of business, and do they have, or what types of different areas of expertise do they bring to the community?
HULL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS: Our faculty are some of the leading experts in their respective fields, from management, marketing, finance, accounting, economics and what’s great is they do a lot of interdisciplinary type work, so they they often are in a situation where they’re looking to solve real world type problems.
So that it’s very applied research. It is research that can often find ways to help the business community. Often, some of their research starts with hearing about something that’s going on in the local community, in the local market, and they start to use their expertise to find solutions.
ABD: Can you think of maybe one of your professors that was called upon to sort of help, and they partnered, and then how did it turn out?
HULL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS: Yeah, so we had a company that came to us about wanting to do an economic impact study, and they talked with a couple of our faculty members, one in particular, then had the idea of coming to me and saying, you know, this is something that I think, based on the timeline and the scope of the project, we could recruit some students to help participate and be a part of this project.
Obviously, the faculty member leading that effort was the main point of contact towards the end, and when the project was done, it was a great opportunity for those students to then present their work in front of the employer.
It led to those students getting a scholarship, because the employer said, “Well, this study would have cost us this amount, and we’d rather give that to the college to recognize and award the students.”
So, it’s a great opportunity of just collaborating and partnering, and solving problems in the local area.
