2 Questions with the Dean: High School Competition

If your high school-aged child has an interest in business, there are a few clubs they can join. In today’s 2 Questions with the Dean—Dean Thompson of the Hull College of Business explains how HCOB is working with high schools on a special competition.

ABD: Can you define what DECA and FBLA are, and the actual competition that you have?

HULL: There are two different chapters, but they tend to have regional and state-level type competitions that fit within the domain of business. So, one of the things that we are interested in doing is hosting an event locally at Augusta University and done by the Hull College of Business, where we can then invite various high schools that have a DECA or FBLA chapter.

It’s really meant to be our own kind of business competition, but it gives students an opportunity to come to a local competition before the regional and state competitions happen.

And so we are, we’re looking to host it in October this year, and we are hoping to bring in a lot of different DECA and FBLA chapters and really kind of create a neat environment, even play off the border bash as it relates to business competition. So, we’ll get counties and like Aiken and North Augusta to come and participate as well.

ABD: How do you feel that this will be a help to the Hull College of Business as you move on down the road?

HULL: So, being able to host an event like this, we’re bringing these high school students onto campus, and they’re going to get to experience a lot of different faculty and staff.

I think this will be something in the minds of high school guidance counselors, teachers, and students.
