Augusta native takes a swing at the golf shoe business

Augusta native Edgar Evans, Jr. doesn’t have a lucrative shoe contract like Tiger Woods, but he loves golf and has a passion for sharing the sport with young people from underserved communities.

Evans golf instructor for the Atlanta Country Club and host of a golf TV show, Saturday Foursome, recently developed a signature golf shoe he calls The Edgar 1’s.

The shoes will only be available during Masters Week from Saturday, April 2 to Sunday, April 10. Evans plans to release a different shoe the first week of April every year according to his website.

Edgar Evans is selling his golf shoes during Masters Week only to help fund his work with underserved kids.

The Edgar 1’s were inspired in part by his favorite athletic shoes and include his favorite Bible passage, Psalms 27: 13-14: “I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and courageous. Wait for the Lord.”

As a child, Evans honed his golf skills by reading Golf Digest and watching the Golf Channel. He earned a scholarship to play for Southern University and A&M College, but he didn’t have the best golf equipment.

“I only played with 13 clubs because I didn’t have a five iron,” Evans said. “I can’t change the past, but I’ll do everything to make sure it doesn’t happen to a kid like me in the future.”

He founded 13GolfClubs, a nonprofit that provides new golf equipment and lessons for young people who can’t afford them. Evans will donate 10 percent of his shoe sales to the nonprofit.
