Changes in College Football Will Continue to be Driven by Dollars (and Sense?)

During my three-week hiatus from writing this column earlier this month, Augusta Business Daily’s publisher (Neil Gordon) and editor (Mitzi Oxford) chose to fill my usual space with what they considered “Best of” columns of mine from the past year. One of those columns was one which I wrote in December in which I made business-related predictions for 2024. (Note:  Toward the end of June, I will write a column that will evaluate how accurate all of those predictions have been at the halfway point of the year.) One of

Flying high from Master$ week

Staff at Augusta Regional Airport are tallying up the numbers following the 2024 Masters Tournament. Across the board, most are higher than for the 2023 tournament. Looking first at the number of flights, the airport traffic peaked on Friday with 645 flights. That compared to 544 in 2023, but still below the 684 the airport logged in 2022. In fact, although numbers were higher for most categories, 2024 is still overshadowed by the 2022 tournament visitors. “All our performance indicators were behind 2022. But keep in mind that 2022 was

Simon Says: Positive Economic News

The Augusta Leading Economic Index (LEI) increased 0.3 percent in March from February. It is 1.6 percent higher than March 2023. The two components that contributed positively to the gain were residential building permits (up 8.8 percent) and initial claims for unemployment insurance (down 28 percent). Residential building permits have generally been on an upward trend since the financial crisis of 2008 and reflect a growing population from 535,000 in 2008 to 629,000 in 2023. Although initial claims for unemployment insurance fell, job openings also fell for the sixth consecutive

Business Lunch Review: Beamie’s At The River

Food Quality: 4 Service: 5 Business Meeting: 4 Value: 4 Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 I feel it’s important to start this review with a confession: I don’t eat seafood, but I enjoy eating at seafood restaurants. That probably doesn’t make sense, but I’ll explain. Those eateries typically serve good burgers, steaks, chicken tenders, and other menu items offered specifically for land lovers like me. Many of my family members, including my wife, love seafood, such as fish, shrimp, oysters, and scallops. I’m happy to join them for dinner
