Editor’s Note:
Wes Hennings never met a meal he walked away from and is an opinionated eater! Each Thursday he shares the results of a business lunch he’s had with a colleague as a way to advise our business community on the good, bad, and tasty across the CSRA. He doesn’t let ABD or the restaurant know where he is going and his opinions are his own. He grades the restaurants he visits on a 1-5 scale with “5” being outstanding. We call this our “Real Business Lunch Review”.

Sometimes you find a gem in the least expected place. That’s what happened when I drove up to a seedy motel that’s honestly an eyesore in the middle of our city. The new 2 Boys Pizza and Grill has taken over the space long occupied by Denny’s on Washington Road, and despite the look on the outside, inside is a real treat.
We walked in right at noon on a typical Tuesday, and I was honestly surprised to see this place almost half full. While most of the trappings of the diner are gone, there’s still the long counter against one wall and a kitchen opening for passing through plates. The booths remain, but above everyone’s seat is a motivational saying from the likes of Gandhi or his almost equal, Walt Disney.
We were greeted promptly by a very friendly waitress who feels like she came right out of Hometown, USA. There were five lunch specials that all included a salad. My wife had the 7-inch pizza, and I couldn’t decide between chops and fries or chicken Alfredo. The waitress recommended the made-from-scratch Alfredo, and it’s one of the best recommendations I’ve had in a long time.
The food arrived at our table faster than our favorite Tex Mex spots, and was hot and fresh. The pizza was crisp with melty cheese and the Alfredo was better than advertised. I’m glad it comes with bread, because I literally wiped the bowl clean. I even ate the broccoli, which is rare for this guy.
I would definitely take a business associate here, because of the food and a decent place to have a conversation. I would give them the caveat however, that they should close their eyes until they enter, because the attached hotel and parking lot are the reason it can’t receive top marks.
2 Boys is exactly the kind of place I wanted to find when I started writing this column. A literal mom and pop establishment with great food that you may not know about. It’s clearly a restaurant startup, and at this location, I always wonder how long it will last. So help them out and have a great meal while you’re at it.
My favorite part of the experience came at the end of the meal. The waitress was busy so one of the owners came to get us a carryout drink and check us out. She was so polite and genuinely seemed so happy to have us there. She invited us back and offered such a warm smile. I’ll extend that invitation to everyone. Tell them I sent you, and I may even see you there.
