The spring’s hottest new release is the sports drama Challengers, directed by Luca Guadanino and starring Josh O’Connor, Mike Faist, and Zendaya in a role that defines the current trajectory of her career. Horsin’ around in the CSRA on Derby weekend is big business

It’s a big week for horses in Kentucky and Aiken, SC. Not unusual for either location. There is a connection between the two. Thoroughbreds helped build Aiken into a destination for horse lovers and visitors from the north who fell in love with the city and moved here. The breed is also for racing in the bluegrass state of Kentucky and for steeplechase and other horse shows in Aiken. Yesterday was the beginning of two weeks of events for the Aiken Charity Horse Show at Bruce’s Field. When Bruce Duchossois

And we’re off to the racing movies!

“If you ain’t been throwed, you ain’t rode,” John Steinbeck told the young playwright, Terrence McNally, the latter downtrodden after an unsuccessful staging of his first play. The language of horse-riding and racing seems embedded in the verbiage of American daily life; “get off your high horse,” “across the board,” “jockeying for position,” and “Dark Horse.” This Saturday, the poetry of racing will echo throughout South Louisville and into Churchill Downs for the 150th time: The Kentucky Derby will begin. In between reading the odds and betting guides, looking ahead

Stanley Donen: The South Carolinian who changed movie musicals

April 13th marked what would have been the 100th birthday of one of the most under-appreciated maestros of American movies, Stanley Donen. Though his name is not as immediately recognized among the masses compared to the likes of his contemporaries, he is synonymous with an entire genre of film – where Alfred Hitchcock was a thriller and Frank Capra was the American dream, Donen, for a while, was the movie musical. Born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1924, Donen fell in love with movies at age 9, watching Fred Astaire

Civil War: A Satire with Nothing to Say

The readout of the period in which we, Americans, currently coexist among the press and historians is a resounding “turbulent.” As citizens, we’re constantly being fed fear about our friends and neighbors, the political machine, and the future of Democracy. The worst prospect pushed is that of a second civil war. Writer and Director, Alex Garland, apparently recognized this and chose to exploit it in his new movie, aptly titled, Civil War. However, like the insidious deflections and projections by those holding legitimate power in our nation who would rather
