ABD recently interviewed Abbie Baumann, sales and marketing manager for Overhead Door Company of Augusta/Aiken about the company’s 100th anniversary and the success of its local branch. Overhead Door was founded in 1921 by C.G. Johnson – the inventor of the garage door. Johnson later invented the first electric door opener. Based in Dallas, the corporation sells and services a variety of garage door systems for both residential and commercial buildings in 50 countries worldwide. How long has the Overhead Door Company of Augusta/Aiken been in business?
OHD Augusta started in 1975 as Augusta Overhead Door Sales, and then in 1980, Jack (Sheppard) acquired the franchise for the Overhead Door Company of Augusta.

How did the local company celebrate the 100th anniversary?
We have just been blessed to be busy this year. We haven’t had time for a celebration but have enjoyed the 100-year logo gifts/shirts from corporate.
How long have you been with the company, and what do you enjoy most about your job?
I started in 2015 as a part-time job for the summer while in college. I fell in love with it and never left! It is a family business, and I am third generation, so I’d say it’s in my blood. I enjoy helping people choose the best door for their home whether it’s new construction or a remodel.

What kind of customer feedback does your company receive?
I think we have very loyal customers who have enjoyed doing business with us over the years. We are family-oriented, so I think our customers appreciate that.
How did COVID affect the business?
We never shut down throughout COVID, but the pandemic has affected the production of products at the factories. What used to take two to three weeks is now running 15-18.
