Downtown businesses to host free block party

A group of downtown business owners have teamed up to host a free block party this weekend.

The 8th Street Holiday Artisan Market will be held on Friday, Dec. 10 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will be held on 8th Street between Ellis Street and Greene Street.

“Almost all the businesses on 8th Street are participating,” says Gary Dennis, Executive Director of the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, which is helping to host the event along with AARP, Humanitree House, the Downtown Development Authority, Beulah’s Antiques, and Aficionados. “We have 35 vendors,” who will sell a variety of items, such as food, artwork, clothing, and gifts.

He explains he and the business owners planned to hold the event last December, but they changed their minds due to COVID-19. “Last year, it was out of an interest in making sure everyone was financially health coming out of COVID,” Dennis states. “This year, we seem to have learned to live with the virus a little better.”
