Claire Riche has created a fun, interactive trick-or-treat event that helps to promote businesses in downtown Augusta.
Riche is the organizer of the third annual Trick or Treat on Broad Street, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 starting at 5 p.m. During the free event, more than 40 businesses, including The Southern Salad, Grantski Records, and Knuckle Sandwiches, will distribute candy to children 12 and under.
The event will also include an art show hosted by Augusta & Co. and the Greater Augusta Sports Council, as well as face painting provided by Bike Baby. Most of the participating businesses are located in the 900 to 1200 blocks of Broad Street, but businesses located outside that area will have tables. Sponsors include Mod Ink, The Book Tavern, Two Dudes, and Boat Kayak Rentals.
She hopes people will not only come to Trick or Treat on Broad Street but also shop and dine at downtown businesses.
“Most of the retailers will be open for shopping,” Riche said. “It’s always good to stay downtown and get something yummy to eat after the event.”
One of the participating businesses is Field Botanicals, beauty and personal care shop located at 215A 12th St.
“Downtown community events, especially free ones, help promote a sense of community and encourage locals to support locally-owned businesses,” said the store’s owner, Jennifer Tinsley. “When people see businesses opening their doors for a family-friendly event, they are more likely to think local when they shop.”
Riche said about 1,000 children participated in last year’s event, and some businesses even ran out of candy. This year, many businesses have donated candy to ensure they don’t run out.
The first Trick or Treat on Broad Street was held in 2019 and was canceled in 2020 due to covid.
“It’s gotten bigger and bigger every year,” she said.
Mod Ink has also designed T-shirts, which can be ordered at modinktees.com/buy-stuff until Oct. 23 and will be available for pickup at the event.
